OMG, I'm a Winner!

I got the news this afternoon that I won two prizes in the Laurel Contest! My blue and white dress got First prize for the "Reader's Choice" category and my coral dress won second prize for "Best Use of Color." I had spent the morning obsessivily checking my RSS reader on my phone to see when the winners would be announced, and was taken off guard when I got a message from Sarai telling me that I had won in two categories! Of course I immediately told my co-workers and texted Phillip, my mom, and several friends!

I'm beyond stoked and completely overjoyed. Looking at all of the other entries and the winners, I am so proud to be among these amazingly talented seamstresses. When you look at these photos so much creativity is evident and so much skill that far surpasses mine!

Thank you so, so much to everyone who voted for me in this contest and especially to Jose and Danielle for helping me take the photos and edit them! I really appreciate your support!

  3. Congratulations. I've loved both of these dresses since the first time I saw them. I think it's safe to say I'll be adding in those darts from the licorice dress when I get around to making up my Laurel after seeing your results from that method.

  4. Congratulations! I love your dresses, and I'm glad you've also won the readers' choice! Maybe in a near future, you'll explain to a beginner sewist like me how you added darts in your blue and white dress, I think you did a great job! ;)

    1. Thanks Mary! I'm hoping to make another Laurel soon and I'll post a tutorial on how I added the darts and fitted it. I just ordered the fabric for it :)

  5. Congratulations! Well-deserved winner for both frocks. They are beautiful, technically great, and very flattering. I would like to place an order :-)!
I think the use of darts is superb. I have seen some rather unflattering Laurels, and now I know why. The curvier amongst us need to do just what you've done, and make some stunning dresses!

Brava! And of course, this is how I discovered your blog, so I look forward to reading more!

    1. Thanks! I actually decided from the beginning to add the darts, knowing that's the only way this would work for my shape. I've realized over the years that I need some kind of waist definition for dresses to look good on me. I'm glad it's been helping out other curvy girls! I'm hoping to post a tutorial soon showing how I did the darts and fitted it. Thanks again!

  6. I totally voted for your dress in the reader's choice. I'm so glad you won! I didn't get around to looking at the entries for the other categories, but I think I love your coral dress even more than the blue & white. Both are great. I am the most glad to see that you were able to take this very basic, & not too shapely, dress & make it shapely enough to be flattering. I bought the Laurel for its simplicity because I'm still a beginning sewist, but I have since been hesitant to make it because I'm a very busty size 16. I was afraid it would look bad on me. Now I know what to do so it won't. Thanks. :)

    1. Thank you so much for voting for me! I was pretty shocked that I won that category especially after seeing all of the other amazing dresses in there! I'm also glad to know it's helped you decide to make the Laurel and make it flattering! I know one of the things that I love about sewing is making clothes that fit me and that I can change to my specific needs (for example, I almost always lengthen dresses to just below the knee because that's a better look for me). I'm hoping to post a tutorial soon to show how I added in the darts. Thanks again!

  10. You very much so deserved to win! I was on the fence about this pattern (I'm curvy--which doesn't often mesh well with this style) but after seeing your versions not any more!

They're both lovely and you look fabulous!
