Back to School

I've got new adventures on the horizon! After much deliberation, worry, trepidation, doubt, and ultimately excitement, I quit my full-time job at the day program a little over three weeks ago so I can go back to school!
I'm not doing anything too radical, just taking some classes at my local community college (which is literally just down the street) in the hopes of learning some new skills and doing a bit of career exploration. I've already signed up for a couple of summer classes beginning next month (serger sewing and digital photography). I'm working back at my old job at a restaurant and doing some sewing work for a friend with a busy handmade shop to pay my bills in the meantime.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who has long agonized over which path to take and what I really want to "do with my life." After high school, college, work, the Peace Corps, and more work, and lots of thought, research, and changing my mind over and over again, I realized over the last few years that what I would really like to do is to work for myself doing something creative.  I'm going to take classes in sewing/fashion, graphic and web design, and maybe even business, with the goal of finding a way to support myself doing something that I (at least mostly) enjoy. Wish me luck!

How about you? Was there a time you decided to make a change? How did it turn out?
I'd love to hear your story!

  1. So proud of you, Melissa! I want to talk to you about this, maybe when we are driving to LA? :)

  2. Congrats to you and good luck on your journey! We only have one life, we should live it as we want to :)
I had a nice paying job, though very high stress, and decided to leave it 2 years ago. I'll never look back because my health is so much better as is my mind.
    So, good for you!!!

  3. Yay! It must be so freeing to unleash your creativity and do the things that you love. I've been in that transition mode for a couple of years and am fortunate that I am able to be creative and stay at home taking some time to think about life and ponder the possibilities. :)

PS I can't wait to meet you in LA next month! I decided that I'm going down south that weekend! Yay! :)

  4. very brave and good luck! I am also at this path in my life at the age of 35 where i have realised just how miserable i am doing my job! I am stuck in a job I simply can't afford to quit i'm exploring ways to re-train myself without quitting my job...could be a tall order!

  5. good luck with your new episode in life - it sounds exhilarating! i'm on a similar path but still in the considering phase. looking forward to seeing your path unfold.

  6. Good luck. It's a big step. I found myself back in school this summer too. Although, I was working in a lucrative job in a contracting industry and a lay-off was the push I needed to get myself enrolled in a new field. Since I already have a BS I decided to go for an AAS at the community college rather than doing another 4 yr degree. I wish my community college had fashion/design classes. I might look at taking some at the local university.
